Yesterday I was walking my dog along the cliffs that circle Corio Bay, Geelong, and I turned around a corner, past a tree and there in front of my face, about a foot away, was a huge owl. It seemed to be stuck on the barbed wire fence. I was thinking how I could get in there to free it without my flesh being ripped apart, when it freed itself and took off, passing literally a centimeter from my nose! It didn't make any sound when it was airborne, but the magpies, crows and larks all ganged up on it and chased it off. It was AMAZING!!!! They were all working as at team!
So anyway, I got home, googled and wiki'd, found your site and can say with some certainty it was either a Masked owl or a common barn owl, although I suspect it was masked.
It was a HOOT!!

Hi all, I am working with the Balook Community to reintroduce Tarra Valley and Bulga NT Parks to Victorians with a natural hist. display, guided walks, talks and photo exhibitions/comp. We need photos and sound of owls and people to give us with walks and talks over the last w'kend of Sept and the 1st & 2 w'ends of Oct and 1 was wondering if anyone was interested?
Feel free to email or ring Bob on 0356871481 and we have a small budget to cover costs. We want the public to know that these special parks were missed by the fires and get people coming back again.

Thank you so much for this wonderful site. Because of you, I was able to discover that the hooting in my neighborhood is coming from Barred Owls - such beautiful, majestic creatures. I've seen them since, and only come to love them more each day. Again, thanks so much for helping me to learn more.

I found a injured baby screech owl this morning. I contacted proper authorities and Hooter is now with the Nature Reserves. The town has been cutting trees down and unfortunately i believe Hooter was living in one of them. He is getting cared for and will be released when healed.

One night my friend and I were sleeping in my backyard in a tent when we heard a cat like noise, my friend said it was a Owl. She has some of the downladable sounds of owls on her Ipod and we came to find out it was a Great horned owl!!
