have been very interested in owls for several years but have gotten away from studying them for quite some time until a few weeks ago when two barred owls began calling. Since then at least one has made itself known literally everynight. Other night while outside one of them (a female I believe because of the size) spotted me in my backyard as I listened to her and actually flew from tree to tree getting closer and closer until she was right before. That barred owl must have sat in that tree calling for ten minutes or more right in front of me until it took flight and flew in front of a light source to the side of my place. This is when I got a good look at just how big and beautiful she was. It's after 8 p.m. now and I have just become aware of the familiar eight hoot call from my backyard/backwoods night raptors. There are two red-shouldered hawks nesting back there also.
