Big Creek High School Owls
The Big Creek High School is a Public school located in McDowell County, War, West Virginia at 1 Owl's Nest Drive. The school offers grades 9-12.
Construction of the school began in 1930, and was completed in 1932. The Owl was chosen as their emblem because they were the first school in McDowell County to play football after dark thanks to
funding for field lights from the War Kiwanis Club.
Big Creek High School received fame in the 1999 film "October Sky" as the school attended by Homer Hickam, Jr. (writer and former NASA engineer) and the "Rocket Boys."
