The Barn Owl: Guardian of the Countryside by Jeff R. Martin

Owl Book

Jeff Martin is a naturalist and conservationist with a passion for studying owls and the species they rely upon. As an established writer, he has had a number of articles published, and this is his second book on barn owls.

After a forward by legendary owl biologist, Heimo Mikkola, "The Barn Owl: Guardian of the Countryside" begins Part 1 with a detailed discussion on the evolutionary history and dispersion of the species, and then a thorough physical description of the Barn Owl with special reference to its unique adaptations and abilities.

Part 2 deals with the Barn Owls behaviour and habits, including Habitat, Prey and hunting, roosting, nesting and breeding as well as final dispersal of young and migration.

Part 3 discusses the future of this bird, including threats to its current survival and ways we might be able to help.

I found "The Barn Owl: Guardian of the Countryside" to be extremely thorough and detailed in its presentation, illustrated with colour photographs, diagrams and tables. The book is very readable, with the science presented in an easy to understand format. I can highly recommend this book to all with an interest in owls and birds.

Hardcover, 256 pages.
